Prepare a hot charcoal fire for heating to quench.

There are some techniques the Japanese bladesmith uses to aid in thorough and even heating of a blade for quenching. The forge is preheated so that heat reflects off the inside walls of the forge. A nice clean fire of pine charcoal is built up, and a steady medium blast of air is fed to the fire. The blade to be heated, having been straightened, stamped and drilled if necessary, is cleaned of any oil or grease. It is then coated in a very thin layer of akatsuchi doro (red clay mud). The muddied blade is dried over the fire, and left above the fire to preheat. The blade is then thrust into the fire, carefully containing the charcoal with the forge poker on the back end of the fire so that the inserted blade doesn’t push half the pile to the back of the forge. The goal is to heat the thickest parts of the blade first and then ‘bleed’ the heat into the thinner, more delicate parts of the blade.
